Beaches for everyone! - Thomson Al Fresco Blog
The weather is warming up nicely now, with temperatures hitting 85° this week. Most people on the campsite are either spending time at the pool or heading towards the beach.
There are quite a few beaches within half an hour’s drive of Sequoia Parc. The nearest, Marennes Plage is only five minutes away but this is not our favourite. La Palmyre has a lovely golden sandy beach, with a sand spit stretching out from it, making a safe paddling area for small children. There are several cafes on the approach road, if a break from the sun is required. The coast road from La Palmyre to Royan offers numerous beaches, some sandy, others rocky.
On the Island of Oleron, the Grande Plage is a beautiful sandy beach stretching for miles. The nearest village, “Grande Village” has shops and cafes, but it’s quite a way from the beach – about 10 minutes’ walk. There is a small car-park nearer, but no other facilities, so a picnic and plenty of drinks are needed. A small, electric train runs past the beach from St. Trojan, a larger town a few miles away.
About 5 miles past Rochefort, the town of Fouras has 3 beaches, as well as a fort which houses a museum, all of which are very popular. The car-parks are right next to each of the beaches and there are lots of refreshment places. There’s also a super ice cream shop which not only has about a fifty different varieties of ice-cream, but can also turn them into milk shakes instead.
We stumbled across Port de Barque on a drive out and found that it is very popular with the locals – always a good sign. At low tide, you can drive across to the Isle de Madame, checking, of course, the tide times for the return. The sea has been trapped to make a safe, saltwater pool for swimming. There’s a small beach which was packed with French families enjoying an afternoon out. We had a beautiful walk along the cliff tops, looking out over the sea and across to Isle d’Oleron.
Although, the campsite pool is spectacular, for many families with small children, bucket and spade days at the beach are essential and here at Sequoia Parc you do not have to travel far to reach one.
